Men and women whose abdomen is disproportionate to the rest of the body due to excess skin and fat or weakened abdominal muscles. This mainly occurs in women after pregnancy.

Incisions and technique:

A horizontal incision is made just above the pubis and extends laterally to the pelvic bones. The length of the scar depends on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. Usually the scar is hidden by the swimsuit. When excess skin is small and fat deposits are concentrated below the navel, the horizontal incision may be very small. It's what we call mini tummy tuck.

When there is excess skin above the navel, a second incision is made around the navel, releasing it from the abdominal skin; excess skin is then pulled down and removed, the navel is repositioned, remaining in its original location

Recovery Time

Back to work: 2-3 weeks. Physical efforts, exercise and sunning: 4 to 6 weeks or more. Disappearance or flattening of scars: between 3 months and two years.

Duration of Results

The abdomen should remain firm and smooth for many years if there is no weight gain or pregnancy. However, over the years, with severity and aging, a second procedure may be needed to improve body contour.

Anyone planning to become pregnant in the future or lose weight should discuss it before surgery. The scars of previous abdominal surgeries can influence and limit the results of abdominoplasty. There may be an improvement in stretch marks located below the navel where the skin will be removed. Stretch marks above the navel are less visible when the skin is stretched. Sometimes liposuction can be used in place of a tummy tuck or in conjunction with it.

Improve the shape of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and correcting the abdominal wall musculature.

General anesthesia is required when the muscle wall has to be corrected. In other cases only local anesthesia with sedation is required.

Operating Time

2 to 4 hours.

Uma abdominoplastia completa necessita no mínimo de 24 horas de internação (especialmente se combinada a outra cirurgia). A mini-abdominoplastia pode ser feita em regime de ambulatório, embora a internação por 24 horas seja mais confortável.

Temporary pain can be treated with pain killers. Swelling, tenderness, numbness of the abdominal skin, bruising and tiredness can last a few weeks. Small drains when used are removed after a few days. They are used to prevent fluid accumulation in the abdominal wall. Dressings are changed every other day for the first two weeks. A brace may be worn for 20 to 30 days. Stitches are removed in stages between the first and second weeks.

Liquid collection under the flap. Blood clots, infection, bleeding under the skin. Reactions to anesthesia. Prolonged healing. Visible scars or skin loss. Need for second operation. Possibility of keloids (thick scars) in patients with tendency. Any of these complications may occur, but every precaution is taken to avoid this possibility.
